History

Cabbage Island was originally called "Isle of Shoals" by English settlers in the 17th century. The name was changed to "Cabbage Island" in the 18th century after wild cabbage plants were found growing on the island.

In the early 19th century, the island was used as a grazing pasture for sheep. In the late 19th century, a family named Moore purchased the island and began operating a clambake restaurant. The restaurant has been continuously operated by the Moore family ever since and is now a popular tourist destination.

Clambake

The clambake is a traditional Maine seafood feast that is served on Cabbage Island. The clambake is cooked in a large pit dug in the ground and is typically served with lobster, clams, mussels, corn, potatoes, and onions.
